Haun grew up in Glatia, Kansas, attending a one-room schoolhouse and then attended Kansas University studying microbiology and chemistry. In 1956, she was the first woman to be accepted into KU’s Medical School. She spent 30 years of her career at a hospital lab in San Francisco before retiring and moving to Lawrence, Kansas.

Nearly every tree in Day’s front yard has a tree face, or even multiple. “It makes the tree look alive… It gives them a being,” Day said. Day has also lost tree faces, mostly to Ash Borers, an invasive beetle that kills Ash Trees. She does not move the “treeless” tree faces to a new tree. Instead, she puts them in a bucket in the garage. Sasha, was born on Sept. 8, 2021. Two weeks after giving birth, Golieva submitted her official application to be on the ballot for Aarhus city council. In Denmark, parents have a combined 52 weeks of paid leave, 32 of which can be shared between the mother and father however they choose. According to Golieva, they are fortunate to both be home at the same time. Janssen stays home with Sasha while Golieva is campaigning. “I think it is a shame that maternity leave has been designed so that there is only one person at a time,” Golieva said.
