In Fanø, Denmark, I met a group of Germans flying kites on Rindby Strand, the beach on the west coast. The group of friends met at Fanø’s kite festival, Fanø International Kite Fliers Meeting, in June 2021. In September, they planned a reunion in Fanø. All of the kites pictured are hand-made. Lempert’s first kite took 40-50 hours to build. In the winter when they are not flying kites, their living room floors are covered in fabrics and design sketches. “As long as I live I will let kites fly,” says Heinrich Lempert.
